How did I get here? It seems like just the other day I could hear my grandmother saying to me, "Why don't you become an electrician like your grandfather". I was appalled, offended even. My plan was to go to college, for what...? I wasn't sure.
My name is Scott LeDuc, I am a master electrician and a renewable energy business owner who loves all things home energy efficiency, smart home technology, solar and renewables, you name it!
But how did I get here 20 years later? It definitely was not a straight line.
It just so happened that my best friend growing up was an electrician's apprentice. He said he could get me a job, and we could start our own business together in like 6 months! Sign me up!! I could see the money flowing in, the business growing, maybe Grandma was right....not so fast
Becoming an electrician varies by state. In the state I started my career in (Massachusetts) I had to be an electrician's apprentice at the time and work in the field for 4 years as well as do the equivalent of 4 semesters of electrical trade school (600 hours in the classroom) just to qualify for the journeyman exam. After a journeyman license it is roughly another 1 year or more and additional schooling to become a master electrician.
Needless to say, my electrical business in six months did not happen, but something else did.
I began to learn the skilled trade. I was lucky to get in with a small company that did quite a bit of energy efficient work, such as LED lighting, smart home automation, fire alarm system, HVAC efficiency systems, variable frequency drive systems...etc. It all sounds fancy but it is just another name for energy efficiency. Companies wanted to save money, and with the technology coming online, the opportunity was there.
By the time the great residential solar boom started in roughly 2010, I was a journeyman electrician in several states and working towards my masters. I had immense experience in renewables, smart technology, solar, electrical upgrades to accommodate additional smart home technology and renewable energy. I quickly became a leader in the operational world of renewables and never looked back.
I am now a master electrician in over 35 jurisdictions (state, local), run my own energy efficiency company (took 15 years and not 6 months), and am basically a nerd when it comes to all things smart home and renewable for my home.
And along the way I moved across the country twice, got married and have two amazing boys!
My purpose for Clever Watts is to take everything I have learned along the way and give it all back in these pages. I believe whole heartedly in the renewable energy movement and I cannot get enough of learning how to make my home smarter and more energy efficient!
